What I learned from Mercury Retrograde for leadership

What I learned from Mercury retrograde as a magnetic leader…

You know when there’s an electrical storm and the power flicks on and off or goes out completely? Mercury retrograde is kind of like that.

So how do you, as a creative soulful leader, keep your energy on during mercury retrograde? First, a little science lesson.

(Insert science)
(State the obvious: I’m not a scientist)

Mercury, which is the closest planet to the sun, completes one trip around the sun every 88 days. Earth takes one year, or 365 days, to complete its orbit around the sun. Basically, one year on Earth is like four years on Mercury.

Mercury passes the earth in its orbit, every 88 days, as rounds the bend, Mercury slows down and appears to stop and spin backward.

Retrograde = Mercury moving east in the night sky and appears to spin backward or stop
Prograde = Mercury moving west in the night sky

It’s a celestial illusion that astrologers, spiritual lightworkers, and many religions believe affects the energy on Earth because Mercury rules tech, travel and communication—computers crash, emails aren’t delivered, miscommunication runs rapid, you’re triggered by people and old patterns you thought you had handled pop up.

(Now, back to you)

Let’s imagine you’re driving in your car. It rains, so you turn on your windshield wipers. You go through some muddy waters, you need a car wash.

Mercury retrograde is as if the universe is splashing you with the muddy waters of your past patterns, it’s messing with your windshield wipers and your in the car thinking, “What’s happening?! Why won’t anything work?! What’s wrong with me!?”

Here’s the opportunity:

The gift of Mercury retrograde, or any day you are triggered, is to enrich your leadership capacity to be with more.

As someone who is an intuitive leader, you have the self-awareness to know when you’re being triggered. Maybe it’s your kids in the morning because they “just won’t hurry up!” or maybe it’s that client that keeps postponing your meeting. “They don’t respect my time!”

What to do in Mercury Retrograde, or really, any day you are triggered:

1. Gain awareness of the trigger: “My client has postponed…again.”

2. What’s my experience? Does my ego take over and respond? Am I pissed? Did I roll my eyes, and think, “Forget it! They obviously don’t value me or my time!”

3. Choice moment: choose your reaction from ego or from your intuitive creative leadership.

How would it be different if you chose to think of the postponement as a gift? “So my client postponed, now I get to have a cup of tea, work from home and write this blog post.” Or “Now I can hop on a call with my other client for an added 30-minute bonus session!”

Choose what makes you feel good and is aligned with who you want to be:

  • Creative
  • Empowered
  • Expansive
  • Curious
  • Visionary
  • Wise
  • Open
  • Soulful
  • At Ease
  • Divine
  • In Flow

Now with that awareness, I want to challenge you: How are you being triggered this week? How can you shift your mindset towards a choice that’s in alignment with who you want to be?

And from that place, now what’s possible?
