I Think I Need a Coach or Consultant for my Business, Now What? — Part 1

As an entrepreneur I find myself going down a one-person rabbit hole that looks like this:

What should I do?

How should I do it?

What if I did this? Or that?

Rinse, repeat.

My go-to magic 8-ball for getting a grip on the answers is to ask my fellow creative entrepreneurs in Forth Chicago. Forth is the women’s entrepreneurial group that I co-founded in 2013 (in Chicago and want to come to an event? Peek here.)

But, recently I started on a self-reflection trip about next steps for my career. Quickly realizing this was a really big question that I needed to dig deeper into my soul to find the answers, I also quickly realized.. my soul is not a place I dig deep into often. I needed help. So I started to dig into resources like a life coach, a business coach, and a ton of business management and self-realization books, and let me say, there are a lot of resources out there.

Because I dove down this rabbit hole, I thought I would take you along for the ride in a series of posts over the next few weeks to give you some insights on how to go about selecting a business coach or consultant. Maybe we’ll end up in a bigger, brighter, better place together.

Difference between a Coach and Consultant-07-07

First, let’s distinguish between the terminology. The words coach and consultant are seemingly used interchangeably, but there’s a definite difference that you’ll want to note when bringing someone else in to help with your business.

A consultant is someone who works in partnership with you on a specific aspect of your business. They help formulate an action plan and then they’re the one to execute.

For example, at my boutique branding agency, Step Brightly, we are brand consultants. If you need a new brand design and website, the Step Brightly team works with you to create the heart of your unique brand, and then we bring it to life by designing and creating your brand from all touch points.

A coach is someone who will focus on the bigger picture of your specific business or life need, and then they’ll create a plan for success and guide you through it.

They’re helping you lay the foundation, mark out the path, and then you’re the one who has to do the work to make it from Point A to Point B. The coach is your north star and biggest cheerleader.

In my coaching practice, I guide clients through an inspirational process of goals, ideas, and tangible results that they can put into action on their own while counting on her for continued support. I’m coaching my clients on how to utilize and develop their brand in a way that gets them the results they need for their business. Coaching is the DIY cousin to consulting.

If you’ve been toying around with the idea of bringing a business coach or consultant into the inner workings of your business, or your life for that matter, now’s the time to start making moves because finding the right person can be a major game changer in your road to success.
